Self-Care After ASCT

Last updated on: 3/25/2025

You play a crucial role in your recovery. Following these self-care guidelines from Day 100 to beyond can help minimize risks and improve your quality of life.

Hygiene

  • Take daily showers and wash hands frequently.
  • Avoid lotions and makeup unless approved by your care team.
  • Use new, unopened makeup products to prevent infection.

Physical Activity

  • Engage in light exercise (e.g., walking) to maintain circulation, lung function, and muscle tone.
  • Wear a mask and gloves when walking around medical facilities.

Lung Health

  • Use an incentive spirometer to prevent fluid buildup in your lungs, which can lead to pneumonia.
  • Deep breathing exercises help keep your lungs strong.

Nutrition

  • Chemotherapy may alter taste and reduce appetite.
  • Eat small, frequent meals, even if food tastes different.
  • Try high-calorie shakes (Ensure, Premier Protein) to meet calorie needs.

Staying Engaged

  • Recovery can be isolating, so keep your mind active with puzzles, books, and virtual connections.
  • Video calls can help you stay connected with loved ones.

Maintaining a Positive Attitude

  • A hopeful, proactive mindset can make a difference.
  • Therapy or support groups may help if you feel depressed or anxious.
