Choosing a Transplant Center
One of your first steps, if not already made, will be to select a myeloma specialist and transplant treatment center.
Research has shown that individuals with myeloma who are seen by a myeloma specialist live longer.

A stem cell transplant involves specialized care and is only offered at certain hospitals or large cancer centers. Talk with a myeloma specialist about which transplant facility they recommend or are affiliated with.
Your oncologist's office can also assist with identifying a specialist and facilities that conduct stem cell transplants, as not all cancer centers perform SCTs.
Once you’ve determined the location for your SCT, they will set up an appointment for you to meet with the transplant coordinator. This person will outline the process for you, provide a calendar of dates for the various steps of the procedure and set up meetings for you with the other members of the care team.
Here are some guidelines for choosing a transplant center:
- Geographic location and commute: Consider choosing a facility that is close to home.
- Treatment options: Determine whether they offer inpatient or outpatient SCTs and which feels more right for you and your situation.
- Insurance coverage: Inquire if your insurance cover medical expenses at this facility, ask the healthcare insurance company about a dedicated case manager.
- Treatment center outcomes: Inquire how many transplants has the center performed for patients with multiple myeloma.
- Support services: Explore type of support services are offered for patients and caregivers.
- Clinical trials: Explore available clinical trials at this facility if this interests you.
- Second opinions: Get a second opinion if desired or necessary.
