As a caregiver, you might be wondering what your role will be after the stem cell transplant. Below is a list that gives a good picture of the duties and responsibilities you will have. 

 Remember to share the burden with others as often as possible so that you don’t experience burn out. Your health is just as important and the person’s who was diagnosed with multiple myeloma.  

  • Transportation to and from daily clinic visits
  • Ensuring medications have been taken as prescribed
  • Assisting with side effects and calling the nurse if needed
  • Encouraging hydration (lots of water and non-caffeinated fluids)
  • Making sure there is a daily walk to aid recovery
  • Grocery shopping and preparing neutropenic-friendly meals
  • Keeping your home clean (patients cannot clean for months)
  • Tracking side effects and discussing them with your medical team
  • Providing moral support and encouragement
