Infection
Because your white blood cell count will be down, you will be at risk for developing infections. You will be particularly susceptible to bacterial infections.
The infection prevention measures in the transplant unit are designed to lessen the risk. If you develop a bacterial infection, you will be given intravenous (IV) antibiotics.
Fungal or viral infections (which are more serious and more life-threatening) may also occur. These infections are less likely to occur due to the short time that your counts will be down, and it is hoped that they can be avoided with oral medication.
Remember, fever can indicate an infection, so any sign of higher temperature should be reported immediately to the treatment team, whether outpatient or inpatient. Don’t wait!
