Additional Common ASCT Side Effects and Management
Last updated on: 3/25/2025
While this is not a comprehensive list, here are other common side effects one might experience during the stem cell transplant and suggestions for how to resolve them. Remember to always talk with your doctor before adding any medicines, supplements, or large lifestyle changes to your routine.
- Mouth sores (Mucositis) – Gargle with salt and baking soda solution, or ask your doctor about Magic Mouthwash.
- Neuropathy – Report symptoms to your doctor; adjustments to medication may help.
- Anemia – Common throughout myeloma treatment. If severe, discuss options with your doctor.
- Neutropenia – Your white blood count will be lowest about two weeks after transplant. Follow a neutropenic diet, and your nurses may give you booster shots to help.
- Insomnia – Often caused by steroids. Take them early in the morning, avoid naps, and talk to your doctor if sleep issues persist.
- Joint & Bone Pain – Many multiple myeloma patients experience ongoing pain. Work with your doctor to determine the best medication or consider a referral to an orthopedic specialist for spinal fractures or bone issues.
