Patient Power: Diet Proves to Maintain Immune System for Myeloma Patients image

If you take a stroll through any grocery store pharmacy, you'll see pill bottles that promise to be “Immune Boosters” or “Immunity Strengtheners.” Of course, multiple myeloma patients can be enticed because somehow, our immune systems have "let us down" in fighting cancer.

While there is no evidence that supplements boost immunity, Julie Lanford (MPH, RD, CSO, LDN) has researched immune-boosting foods with significant success.

Immunity has more to do with our dietary eating pattern rather than a pill. People who eat more fruits, vegetables and plant-based foods and who avoid excess animal fats or processed foods generally have greater immunity.

“We have stronger immune systems when we eat healthier,” Lanford summarizes.

Adding a multivitamin, vitamin D, or anything that you have found already works for you (that has been approved by your doctor) to layer on top of a healthy diet is completely acceptable.

“Your immune-boosting strategy should really be focused on food.” –Julie Lanford, MPH RD CSO LDN
