What is the Muscles for Myeloma Program?
Muscles for Myeloma is a campaign promoting fitness for multiple myeloma patients. Because fitness levels determine possible treatments, it is critical that patients stay healthy as possible and prevent co-morbidities that would disqualify them from receiving combination therapies, stem cell transplant or long-term treatments. However, you don't need to run marathons to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Even taking 30 minutes a day to exercise can help you achieve better myeloma outcomes.
This year, the Myeloma Crowd is focused on helping you set high and attainable fitness goals. Our Muscles for Myeloma campaign includes various opportunities to learn and be active:
MUSCLES FOR MYELOMA ARTICLES
During the month of March (Multiple Myeloma Awareness Month) and September (Blood Cancer Awareness Month) we will highlight the importance of fitness in a series of articles on the Myeloma Crowd site. Articles focus on mental, physical and emotional health - all of which are crucial for a patient.
Also, in March we are introducing a free, NEW Muscles for Myeloma Exercise Challenge that encourages patients, family and friends to get active! Next month we'll be releasing more information about the challenge, however to get ready we recommend joining our Muscles for Myeloma Facebook Page or subscribing to the Myeloma Crowd Newsletter. Prizes will be included!
MUSCLES FOR MYELOMA FACEBOOK PAGE
Great way for patients, caregivers, and Myeloma Crowd supporters to get active and stay motivated! Follow our NEW Muscles for Myeloma Facebook Group to learn more about why fitness matters to patients. We'll be posting updates about our fitness challenge in March along with encouraging posts and articles to help us build "muscles for myeloma" together!
MUSCLES FOR MYELOMA EVENTS
Interested in staying active and donating to myeloma research? Join one of our fitness events throughout the year. All proceeds received at these events go to benefit the Myeloma Crowd Research Initiative.
Muscles for Myeloma: 5K and 1M Race, Columbus OH (May 2020)
We are delighted to host the 4th Annual Muscles for Myeloma 5K and 1 Mile Walk in Columbus, Ohio on May 30, 2020. The race was established by the Move MMORE Legacy over 10 years ago and was turned over to the Myeloma Crowd in 2017. We are grateful for the opportunity to continue a race and tradition that has greatly impacted the myeloma community in Columbus. In 2019, we raised over $50,000 for myeloma research with 750 race participants. We anticipate a growing crowd at our June 2020 race and hope you can join us as we "build muscles for myeloma" and run for a cure!
