Quality of Life (QoL)

Last updated on: 1/8/2025

Quality of Life (QoL) is an important endpoint in multiple myeloma trials, focusing on how treatment impacts a patient’s day-to-day life.

Unlike other measures, QoL isn’t just about how well a treatment fights myeloma — it’s about how the treatment affects a person’s overall well-being, including physical, emotional, and social health.

What’s Measured in QoL Studies?

Quality of life assessments look at various aspects of a patient's experience during and after treatment, such as:

How QoL is Evaluated in Trials

Patients often fill out questionnaires at different points in the trial to track any changes in their quality of life. These might include questions about their energy levels, mental health, or how well they can carry out daily tasks. This feedback provides insight into the impact of side effects or the relief of symptoms, offering a more complete view of the treatment's effects.

You can participate in quality-of-life studies through the HealthTree Foundation, as we partner with myeloma specialists and researchers to improve myeloma research in this area.

Why QoL Matters

In multiple myeloma, where treatments can span many years, QoL is crucial. Even if a treatment controls the disease, a high rate of side effects can impact a patient’s ability to live comfortably. QoL measures help doctors and patients choose treatments that not only work effectively but also support a positive, manageable lifestyle.
