About

At the Mayo Clinic Proceedings annual board meeting and retreat on September 15, 2017, Stephen J. Russell, MD, PhD, was honored with a highly cited author award. Dr Russell was one of 6 first authors to receive the award this year.

The award was developed to acknowledge articles for their meaningful contribution to the Journal's latest (ie, 2016) Impact Factor.

Dr Russell and his co-authors were recognized for the article: "Remission of Disseminated Cancer After Systemic Oncolytic Virotherapy," published in the July 2014 (Volume 89, Issue 7) of Mayo Clinic Proceedings.

The article describes the clinical responses of two patients with treatment-refractory multiple myeloma who received intravenous administration of an oncolytic measles virus. The paper underscores the therapeutic potential of this new treatment modality.

"This award demonstrates that physicians are keenly interested in promising experimental anticancer agents," said Dr Russell. Oncolytic virotherapy is highly relevant for refractory cancers that are rarely cured by other treatments."
