Understanding Prostate Cancer Clinical Trials

Joining A Clinical Trial for Prostate Cancer

Last updated and reviewed in March 2026.

Clinical trials are how doctors and researchers find new treatments for prostate cancer. Clinical trials can test different things, such as:

  • New treatments

  • How well current treatments work for different patients

  • Other interventions that improve the quality of life

  • The patients who enroll in clinical trials are all volunteers. All medications approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration are required to go through safe clinical trials to measure how safe and effective they are.

Choosing to join a clinical trial

You may decide to join a clinical trial for many reasons. Sometimes, it is the best treatment option available. You may want to give back to cancer research. Your care team can help you decide if a clinical trial is the best treatment option for you.

Will health insurance cover my treatment in a clinical trial?

In the United States, the Affordable Care Act requires insurance companies to cover routine patient care costs associated with federally approved or funded clinical trials for cancer or other life-threatening diseases. Routine patient care costs include standard cancer treatment costs, supportive care, medical visits or hospital stays, labs, and scans.

Other costs, such as the cost of the intervention or medication being tested, will be covered by the clinical trial sponsor.

There may be some costs you need to pay during a clinical trial. Talk to the research team about what these costs may be, such as travel-related costs.
