Is there a cure for amyloidosis?
00:00:11:05 - 00:00:20:01
Is there a cure for amyloidosis? So I think that so when I talk to my patients about whether there's a cure for amyloidosis, I approach this the same way that
00:00:20:01 - 00:00:22:16
as when we discuss whether there's a cure for multiple myeloma.
00:00:22:16 - 00:00:27:08
So traditionally, we don't think of this as either of them as being terrible illnesses.
00:00:27:08 - 00:00:36:09
But that said, I have some patients who had stem cell transplant 20 years ago and it still hasn't come back. And this is from multiple myeloma as well as amyloidosis.
00:00:36:09 - 00:00:42:00
And so it may be that there is a small number or a small minority of patients that are cured with both disorders.
00:00:42:00 - 00:01:03:00
On the other hand, it's also quite possible that super effective therapy just suppresses this to an extremely low level, that it's still in there, but it takes decades for those cells to actually grow back and cause trouble again. And I think all of us that do multiple myeloma, especially have patients that have had stem cell transplant, been off of therapy, and 15 years later it comes back.
00:01:02:23 - 00:01:06:01
Whether that also happens in amyloidosis, we don't know.
00:01:06:02 - 00:01:10:16
So it's an interesting thing to think about, but we actually don't really know at this point.
