How many patients are diagnosed with amyloidosis?

00:00:12:05 - 00:00:25:05

It's several thousand patients per year. So it's roughly about 1/10 as common as myeloma. So multiple myeloma is about 30,000 or so new patients per year in the United States, and amyloidosis is about 1/10 of that.

00:00:25:04 - 00:00:33:21

But one thing about amyloidosis also is that it's also probably heavily underdiagnosed, meaning that there are a lot of people out there with it who don't know about it

00:00:33:22 - 00:00:46:02

or often because they have symptoms and their local physicians haven't picked up on the fact that they have amyloidosis. And then also, because it's a complicated thing to diagnose, it's not just a quick blood test or an echocardiogram or X-rays.

00:00:46:04 - 00:00:49:22

You really need to do the right test to look for it, to find it.

00:00:49:22 - 00:00:52:02

And so we say that the average

00:00:52:01 - 00:00:59:11

incidence or number of new cases per year in the United States is probably about 3000. But in reality, there's probably more of it out there.

00:00:59:12 - 00:01:07:14

Unfortunately, nowadays, with the increasing recognition of amyloidosis as being a diagnosed more readily and more quickly and efficiently.

00:01:07:14 - 00:01:10:08

And so I think that those numbers are going to go up with time.
