The Complete Patient’s Guide to Autologous Stem Cell Transplant (ASCT)

Preparing for the Inpatient ASCT Procedure

Last updated on: 3/24/2025

Your job while you are in the hospital is to focus on recovery.

  • Hospital staff will manage meals, cleaning, and medical care, allowing you to focus on healing.
  • Engage in low-energy activities such as reading, watching movies, or listening to music.
  • Maintain hygiene and light exercise as recommended.

Packing & Logistics

  • Bring enough clothing, personal care items, and hygiene supplies for a hospital stay of up to a month.
  • If you don’t have someone to do your laundry, check if the hospital has laundry facilities.
  • Plan transportation to and from the hospital in advance.

Communication Plan

  • List trusted contacts and inform them of your expected hospital stay.
  • Set communication expectations: On difficult days, a quick “I’m okay” message may suffice.
  • Arrange a point of contact to update others on your condition.

Make sure to review the 'Pre-Transplant' section of this guide.
