As a caregiver, you may wonder what your role will be after the stem cell transplant. Below is a list that shows some of your duties and responsibilities.
Remember to share the burden with others whenever possible to avoid experiencing burnout. Your health is just as important as that of the person diagnosed with multiple myeloma.-
- Transportation to and from daily clinic visits
- Ensuring medications are taken as prescribed
- Assisting with side effects and contacting the nurse if needed
- Encouraging hydration (plenty of water and non-caffeinated fluids)
- Ensuring a daily walk to aid recovery
- Grocery shopping and preparing neutropenic-friendly meals
- Keeping your home clean (patients cannot clean for months)
- Tracking side effects and discussing them with your medical team
- Providing moral support and encouragement
Patients and care partners are volunteering on the HealthTree Coach program. Most of them have gone through this experience first-hand and can tell you how to navigate all the available information and other useful tips on how to support your loved one during this process.
