What are the potential benefits of taking JAK2 inhibitors for myelofibrosis?

I try to tell my patients that I'm looking for a very specific clinical benefit for patients that are receiving JAK2 inhibitors, and that's to increase their quality of life.

I think patients that have myelofibrosis may have to live with this disease for quite some time, and therefore may suffer from some of the symptoms related to the disease itself. Some of these symptoms include symptomatic and maybe even painful spleen. In addition to the other symptoms such as weight loss, fevers, and night sweats that could be related to the myelofibrosis.

So when I reach for a JAK2 inhibitor, such as ruxolitinib or any of them, I mention that I do believe their spleen will be reduced in size and therefore patients may feel better. We have less pain, and maybe they eat a larger meal and feel that they're getting the adequate nutrition that they really need.

Potentially, there are other symptoms, such as fever and night sweats, that will be abated as well, and that the quality of life will definitely improve with ruxolitinib and other JAK2 inhibitors.
