What is momelotinib?
Momelotinib is the newest JAK2 inhibitor that's been recently approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration as recently as 2023. This medication has a very unique label and indication compared to the other JAK2 inhibitors.
When looked at momelotinib versus other JAK2 inhibitors, such as ruxolitinib, we found equipoise in terms of the spleen size reduction that we see from the earlier JAK2 inhibitors, but the label is very different.
In fact, we had found in these clinical trials a different phenomenon that was very interesting, very meaningful for myelofibrosis patients. And I'm speaking specifically about anemia.
Patients with myelofibrosis commonly suffer from another cytopenia called anemia, where their red blood cells are quite low and patients have a lot of symptoms and experience fatigue associated with the anemia. It can be quite challenging with red blood cell transfusions and other anemia-directed therapies.
So in the clinical trials, looking at momelotinib compared to other agents such as danazol, it was found that using a JAK2 inhibitor as a pill directed at anemia, momelotinib increased the patient's hemoglobin and decreased the needs for further transfusions.
So the label for momelotinib is patients with myelofibrosis and concurrent anemia.
