What types of treatment options are available for CLL patients?
Better to be healthy, better not to have anything, but if you had to have something nowadays, better to have CLL than to have most other things in that the therapies for CLL have advanced more than just about any cancer by a wide margin, especially over the past ten years. Even ten years ago, standard first therapy for CLL was chemotherapy, and the chemotherapy was actually pretty good. It worked most of the time and it was fairly gentle. Most folks were still working full time. Even with that common chemotherapy. Nowadays we have such newer and better targeted therapies that we hardly even use chemotherapy at all. So the main two classes of first line therapy are a group of medicines called BTK inhibitors and another group called BCL2 inhibitors. But that second one is mostly just one medicine called venetoclax, a few different BTK inhibitors and venetoclax. And the truth is, we really can use either them as first line therapies. They are both targeted therapies. They're not chemo. There's a few differences between them, but they're both overall very well tolerated. And they put the great majority of patients into remission. The remissions can last for years, so many years. We don't even know yet what the absolute longest time a patient could stay in remission for. But we all of us have many patients in remission on these gentle, targeted therapies for more than five years and in many cases so very lucky to have these advances that are making patients live their lives quite fully.
