What does it mean to be MRD positive?

00:00:11:08 - 00:00:13:07
So what does it mean to be MRD Positive?

00:00:13:07 - 00:00:16:22
So first, it's important to note that we only really test MRD for patients

00:00:17:01 - 00:00:19:05
who otherwise look like they're in remission.

00:00:19:08 - 00:00:23:13
So first we're talking about a patient who under the microscope,

00:00:23:16 - 00:00:26:14
the bone marrow looks to be in remission, meaning that the blast percentage

00:00:26:17 - 00:00:29:16
or the AML cells are generally less than 5%.

00:00:29:19 - 00:00:34:03
And then we can look to determine whether they might be MRD positive or negative.

00:00:34:05 - 00:00:37:00
So MRD positive just refers to the fact that even though they look like

00:00:37:00 - 00:00:40:06
they're in remission under the microscope with visual inspection,

00:00:40:07 - 00:00:45:09
by some other testing, we can detect evidence of residual leukemia.

00:00:45:10 - 00:00:49:00
So in general, this does translate to a higher risk of relapse,

00:00:49:03 - 00:00:51:15
but it's important to note that not everybody who's MRD

00:00:51:17 - 00:00:54:13
positive will necessarily relapse in the future.

00:00:54:16 - 00:00:58:09
It really depends on whether they receive additional therapy or also, sometimes

00:00:58:12 - 00:01:01:23
we recommend a stem cell transplant for those patients who have persistent

00:01:02:02 - 00:01:05:22
MRD positivity, meaning persistent disease despite their initial treatment.
