The use of CAR-T cell therapy in AML can be challenging because of the markers that are found on both cancer cells and healthy cells, but clinical trials have shown promising results.

Is CAR-T cell therapy

currently being used to treat AML?

At this current stage,
we don't have CAR-T cells for patients

with acute myeloid leukemia,
but we are exploring avenues to provide

them with a donor derived
that would be donor derived CAR-T cells

because most patients diagnosed with acute
myeloid leukemia undergo

an allogeneic stem cell transplantation
and therefore

the status of the immune system
and stem cells are donor derived.

Now, currently the co-expression
or the expression of molecules

on the hematopoietic stem cells

are also the ones that are expressed
on the leukemia cells.

And therefore, if we went in with donor
derived CAR-T cells targeting

any of these molecules,
we would not only kill the leukemia cell,

but also eliminate the normal blood
producing hematopoietic stem cell,

which is the current limitation
for the donor derived CAR-T cells.

But we are working on approaches to
to eliminate markers

expressed on the hematopoietic stem cells
so that we can specifically target

leukemia cells in this situation
that is not too far in the future.

We have initial clinical trials
to show the safety

of down-regulating these cells
and can safely provide

a stem cell product for transplant
with the down-regulated stem cells

so that we can post transplantation
specifically target

residual leukemia cells that have that
down-regulated marker still expressed.
