What HealthTree programs are aimed at decreasing disparities in multiple myeloma?

In this lesson, you will learn about the efforts that the Health Tree Foundation is making to help bridge the disparities gap in myeloma and increase health equity. What is the Black Myeloma Health Program? The Black Myeloma Health Program is an initiative launched by the Health Tree Foundation to address racial disparities in the diagnosis, treatment, and outcome of multiple myeloma amongst Black patients. Despite advances in myeloma research and treatment, Black individuals are disproportionately affected by the disease and often experience poor outcomes compared to other racial groups. The key objectives of the Black Myeloma Health Program include awareness and education. This program aims to raise awareness about multiple myeloma within the Black community, providing educational resources, outreach initiatives, and culturally sensitive materials to empower individuals to manage symptoms of the disease and seek timely medical care. The program advocates for equity in access to quality health care and treatment options for Black myeloma patients, addressing systemic barriers and disparities contributing to unequal outcomes. By amplifying the voices of Black patients, the program seeks to improve health equity and reduce disparities in myeloma care. Another component of the program is community engagement. The program fosters partnerships with community organizations, health care providers, and advocacy groups to engage and mobilize the Black community. Through outreach events, support groups, and collaborative initiatives, the program seeks to build trust, foster dialogue, and empower individuals to take control of their health. The research and innovation component of the program supports research initiatives focused on understanding the unique biological characteristics and treatment responses of myeloma in Black patients with the goal of developing tailored therapies and improving outcomes. The program aims to generate evidence-based insights and advance personalized approaches to myeloma care by promoting diversity and inclusion in clinical trials and research studies. What is HealthTree's REACH initiative? HealthTree REACH stands for Research, Educate, Advocate, Connect, and Heal. It's an initiative we created to be able to support all blood cancer patients. No matter where you are, no matter who you are, everyone deserves the same access to care and we're here to help you. HealthTree REACH focuses on Black or African American patients, Hispanic patients, and rural communities. So we do targeted programs for each of these minority groups. I am more on the Hispanic side, so what we do for Hispanic patients is first focus on giving them the education they need. So we have a ton of education in English. What we do is we first translate everything we have. So we have good resources like HealthTree University. So now we go and interview specialists that speak Spanish and that are able to just give this education to Hispanic patients in their own native language. We have a myeloma website in Spanish. It's called mielomamultiple.org and we publish Spanish news about myeloma. We have a list of coaches that speak Spanish. We have a list of Spanish-speaking myeloma specialists. We also do webinars in Spanish. So we host four webinars a year. We invite different speakers with different areas of interest and knowledge and we invite all Spanish-speaking patients across the world.
