What is the role of alkylator chemotherapy in myeloma?

[Music] what alkylating chemotherapies are used in myeloma alkylating therapies are have been used in myeloma for many many years and they can be used in a variety of different ways the two biggest or most well-known alkylate errs are drugs such as mel Fallon which may also be known as al-quran and cyclophosphamide which is also called cytoxan there's another less commonly used alkylate ur called benda mustn but let me focus a little bit on cyclophosphamide and mel Fallon these drugs are Alka leaders and Alka laterz are a type of classical chemotherapy that interfere with the way that DNA replicates inside of cancer cells and these are classical chemotherapy agent but they can be used in a variety of different ways these drugs can be given as pills in combination with other agents to help fight cancer so people may take melphalan as a pill combined with some steroids or cyclophosphamide combined with other therapies we're also able to give high doses of alkylate ER therapy either to collect stem cells and the use of cytoxan or as the main agent use for high dose therapy when we talk about autologous stem cell transplant in that case we give very high doses of melphalan as an alkyl aid to kill as many of the bad myeloma cells within the marrow as we can we then give patients back some of their own stem cells to fill in the marrow that the Mel fell and got rid of so in this case we can use those Alka later therapies that get rid of a lot of the bad cells and many times more than even some of our novel therapies so we can really get those long remissions [Music]
