Is there a need for imaging in amyloidosis?

00:00:12:05 - 00:00:22:18

Is there a need for imaging in amyloidosis? So, yes, in the sense that often as part of the initial workup for amyloidosis, we often do some sort of imaging to look at the bones,

00:00:22:18 - 00:00:26:15

can be X-rays, although we know that X-rays aren't great for detecting bone disease.

00:00:26:15 - 00:00:42:14

Often pet CT scans are quite good just to see if the bones are in good shape and if there's any indication that a patient with newly diagnosed amyloidosis could have a component of multiple myeloma to it. And then if they have bone disease and we say that they have multiple myeloma as a component of their illness,

00:00:43:05 - 00:00:44:15

and then after that,

00:00:44:16 - 00:00:48:03

guidelines don't generally recommend routine bony imaging.

00:00:48:03 - 00:00:56:08

But if a course if a patient has symptoms that we need to look and that it's possible to develop multiple myeloma later in the disease. For somebody that has amyloidosis.

00:00:56:08 - 00:01:03:01

And then the other thing is looking at other types of imaging. So, for example, the heart. So we do in amyloidosis, we often look at the heart

00:01:03:01 - 00:01:08:17

at variable frequencies, depending on whether a person's known to have heart involvement or if they're not,

00:01:08:16 - 00:01:14:00

because amyloidosis really likes to involve the heart, we often look, at least at some frequency,

00:01:14:00 - 00:01:15:14

to see how the heart's doing.

00:01:15:16 - 00:01:20:14

And aside from that, imaging is sort of symptom guided. But there's not a whole lot that's really

00:01:20:14 - 00:01:23:09

applied to everyone as part of routine, routine management.
