How can I read and understand a research paper?

Most research papers are divided into the same general sections. There's usually an abstract accompanying each research paper in the abstract really contains a very high level summary of the main points that are contained in the research paper. Usually the abstract itself will have sections that include a background section, a methods section, or results section, and a discussion section which mirrors the paper itself.

And often all of the really important aspects of the paper will be contained in the abstract. It's designed to be a way to quickly convey and receive the most important information in the paper. The rest of the paper follows the same structure. There's usually a background section at the beginning that provides general information about the disease and the treatments that are being looked at or the mechanism that's being looked at in the paper.

The methods section will often contain detailed descriptions of exactly how the experiments or clinical trials described in the paper were carried out. The results section should have all of the information about what was found out in the research study, and then the conclusion or discussion section will contain the authors interpretation of their results, including what they think those results mean and what the next steps are going forward.
