What should myeloma patients know about resveratrol? So resveratrol is a compound or a polyphenol that has been extracted and concentrated from the skin of grapes and other substances like natural fruits like that. But the thing about resveratrol is it's gotten attention for its anti-inflammatory properties, antioxidant properties and also maybe the anti-cancer properties. But the issue with it is that we don't have a lot of data in myeloma.
In about 2005-2006, there are a couple of papers published with resveratrol in myeloma and cell lines and showing that it may inhibit growth of these cell lines. So there might have been some preclinical activity, but there has only been one study done so far in patients. And that study looked at resveratrol in combination with or without bortezomib.
And that study was done through Europe, and I think they enrolled about 20 patients or so before the study was terminated early. So they didn't complete the study because they saw an increased signal of renal toxicity for these patients. And so it's important to note that one is a micro ionized form of the resveratrol should not be used in patients with myeloma because of the renal toxicity risk.
But I also think that there's not enough data and potentially a risk of toxicity. So it may not be something that we should be recommending to patients with also their drug interactions and things like that. Until more data is available and it's available in a safer form because patients are always on other drugs too.
