What is the benefit of physical activity?
Exercise is obviously important for everyone and there are several benefits that we are just exploring in research from healthy individuals.
We know obviously that it has a beneficial effect on bone health. It has a beneficial effect on the immune system, it has a beneficial effect on the body weight, which is then also has benefits.
So there are a lot of things that are going on when we work out, our body is made to move and not to sit still.
One of the important things to think about in myeloma is that many of our treatments involve the use of the steroid called dexamethasone. So what does that do to our body?
It causes us to lose the lean muscle mass. It helps power those quadriceps and other muscles to get out of a chair and gain belly fat.
And so exercise can help to offset some of that toxicity. And also, as people age through myeloma, hopefully they live many years with the disease, give people the strength to continue to function and perform all of the activities of daily living that they enjoy.
