What is the role of basic hygiene practices in preventing infection?
Absolutely good hand hygiene is is critical. And this is something that we've known in the medical community, actually it came from our nursing colleagues. But there was big controversial stuff about handwashing over 100 years ago now. But for a good 100 years, we've known that we've got to wash our hands when we're dealing with patients and it's the same thing when you're out and about in the community.
Good hand hygiene’s really important. Making sure that you're in clean spaces. That's not to say that you shouldn't be doing things like going out and hiking in nature and this sort of stuff, just being smart about it, right?
Patients with myeloma are on immunosuppressive medications. They are on medications that may impair wound healing in case of abrasions or cuts and bruises and scrapes. So making sure that those- those things are clean when they do happen and then trying to again, make sure that you're doing some good hand hygiene.
