Overview

Join us for the Raleigh-Durham Myeloma Round Table at the Sheraton Imperial Hotel Raleigh-Durham Airport at Research Triangle Park in Raleigh, NC on Saturday, May 20 from 9 am-3 pm Eastern. An optional Introduction to Myeloma lecture for newly diagnosed patients and novices will be held from 8:30-8:50 am.  Registration opens at 8:00 am.

Please consider joining us the night before for a free dinner and activities with local myeloma patients and caregivers at the SouthEast Myeloma Community Evening Event.

Remember parking is free if you choose to drive from one hotel to another.

Sascha Tuchman, MD

Dr. Tuchman is a board-certified medical oncologist and divides his time between clinical care and clinical research. He studies and treats all forms of plasma cell disorders but has a special research interest in amyloidosis, and in managing older, frail patients with multiple myeloma. He has years of experience in managing patients and leading research efforts in these disorders, and he directs the multiple myeloma and amyloidosis program at UNC. As part of that role, he mentors the research and career development of trainees who have an interest in myeloma and related conditions. Outside UNC, Dr. Tuchman sits on expert groups that design research in and formulate guidelines for managing plasma cell disorders, such as the International Myeloma Working Group, the International Society for Amyloidosis, and the multiple myeloma committee in the Alliance cooperative cancer research group. When not at work, he enjoys playing ice hockey, cycling, playing music, studying languages, reading history, and spending time with his family including his wife and three sons.

Cristina Gasparetto, MD

Dr. Gasparetto performs both laboratory and clinical research in the field of multiple myeloma. Her primary research interests are in developing immunotherapy approaches to treating multiple myeloma particularly in conjunction with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. Ongoing laboratory research projects include the development of dendritic cell vaccines and antibody therapies. Clinical studies include a recently approved trial involving vaccination with autologous dendritic cells pulsed with idiotypic protein following high dose chemotherapy and autologous peripheral blood stem cells transplant. Upcoming trials include novel antibody therapies for multiple myeloma. Dr. Gasparetto is also an investigator on several other clinical trials for myeloma including non-myeloablative allogeneic transplantation, high dose sequential chemotherapy and autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation and transplantation of partially HLA matched unrelated cord blood.

Urvi Shah, MD

Dr. Urvi Shah is a faculty on the myeloma service, division of hematologic malignancies at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. Her research focuses on studying the role of diet, microbiome, and other lifestyle-related risk factors in plasma cell disorders as well as identifying interventions to improve outcomes for these patients. She also studies immune therapies (including CAR T cell therapies) for myeloma. Being a lymphoma survivor herself she is passionate about helping patients make wise nutritional and lifestyle choices as they face a plasma cell disorder diagnosis as well as raising awareness about healthy choices to prevent cancer.

Jonathan Kaufman, MD

Jonathan Kaufman, MD, is Associate Professor and Associate Vice-Chair for Quality and Safety of the Department of Hematology and Medical Oncology at the Emory University School of Medicine. Dr. Kaufman's practice includes treating multiple myeloma and amyloidosis patients. He is also an active clinical and translational researcher in the fields of multiple myeloma, amyloidosis, and bone marrow transplant. His research focus is on the development of optimal treatment regimens and new drug development for patients with plasma cell disorders. Additionally, Dr. Kaufman is a member of the Discovery and Developmental Therapeutics Research Program at Winship Cancer Institute. He also holds memberships with American Society of Clinical Oncology and American Society of Hematology. Dr. Kaufman earned his Medical Degree from the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta. He subsequently completed his Residency in Internal Medicine and his Fellowship in Hematology and Oncology at Emory University.

Sasha E. Knowlton, MD

Sasha Knowlton, MD, is Associate Professor in the Department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center in Chapel Hill, NC. She is a leading expert in cancer rehabilitation, survivorship, and physical movement for cancer patients. Dr. Knowlton completed a postdoctoral fellowship in cancer rehabilitation at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York after completing a residency at the Harvard Medical School Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital. She earned her medical degree at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences.
