THE BIG PICTURE:
Not all myelofibrosis is the same. Some patients do well for many years. Others get sicker quickly. Doctors have been puzzled about why—now research is finding answers.
WHAT THE RESEARCH SHOWS:
Researchers studied 526 myelofibrosis patients and looked at which genes are turned on in their cells. They found 4 different patient groups with very different outcomes.
WHAT THIS MEANS:
Some patient groups have a much higher risk of their disease turning into acute leukemia (30% in 5 years). Other groups have low risk (5% in 5 years). Understanding which group you're in could help doctors choose the best treatment for YOU.
WHY IT MATTERS:
New myelofibrosis drugs are becoming available, but they don't work the same for everyone. This research could help explain why one drug works great for some patients but not others—and help match patients with treatments that actually work for their specific type of disease.
