What are the signs and symptoms of childhood AML? AML is again something that grows in the bones and in your blood. And so sometimes people have bone pains like aches and pains. Generally people will have red spots develop on their skin once their platelets get very low. And another thing you can have when your platelets get very low is bleeding. So bleeding from the gums or things like that. Also growth of the gum tissue can be a sign in pediatric AML that there's leukemia tissue infiltrating the gums around the teeth. Those are generally the symptoms that you would see, but usually I would say often children are asymptomatic and do not have any of those symptoms and are found to have AML simply by getting blood tests. Whether that's just because their doctor draws them, draws the labs for routine checking or because something else is going on and they find that the blood counts are abnormal. Another thing that can happen is you can simply be fatigued and pale and that might stimulate a blood draw which could then reveal the leukemia.
