When should I get a COVID vaccine if I'm going to have a bone marrow transplant? So the transplant part is unique and I guess that's worth mentioning. So for patients who are undergoing chemotherapy, I would say it's better to receive a vaccination when your immune system is as healthy as possible. So if you're undergoing cycles of treatment that result in your immune system going down and then coming back up again, it's probably better to get your vaccination when your immune system is at its strongest. Bone marrow transplant is a unique situation in that it essentially wipes out all of your prior immunity. And so even prior to COVID, there is a set schedule of post-transplant vaccination where patients have to be revaccinated for hepatitis, for polio, for pneumococcus. And so in general, it's not advisable to get a COVID vaccine right before you're about to have a transplant because the transplant will wipe away any immunity and you'll have to be revaccinated anyway. I would say if you are planning to have a bone marrow transplant, I would speak with the bone marrow transplant doctor about when in the post-transplant period it's safe to get a COVID vaccine.
