What are the causes of AML in children? No one really knows exactly what causes AML. There are some conditions that we know that you can inherit certain mutations in your genome from a parent, which makes you more predisposed to getting AML. And there are certain types of conditions where you are very likely to get AML. Those would be examples of blood disorders like fanconia anemia or their inherited bone marrow failure syndromes. There are also some genetic conditions that are passed down through families that make it a little bit of a higher risk for you to get AML. In those conditions, children are at risk. But the majority of children who get AML do not have any of those conditions, and we don't really have a good sense of what leads those children to develop AML.
