What are the signs and symptoms of Acute Myeloid Leukemia?
Posted on: Sep 01, 2023
Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) is a type of cancer that starts in the bone marrow (the soft inner part of certain bones, where new blood cells are made), but most often it quickly moves into the blood. It can sometimes spread to other parts of the body including the lymph nodes, liver, spleen, central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), and testicles.
The signs and symptoms of AML can vary depending on the type of blood cell affected. They are generally nonspecific and may resemble those of other diseases, which can make AML difficult to diagnose. However, common symptoms include:
1. Fatigue and weakness: This is due to anemia (a shortage of red blood cells), which can make a person feel tired, weak, and unable to endure physical activities.
2. Fever: AML can cause fever, often due to an infection. This is because leukemia cells can crowd out normal cells, leading to a decrease in the number of healthy white blood cells that can fight off infections.
3. Shortness of breath: This can occur due to anemia, which means the body is not getting enough oxygen-carrying red blood cells.
4. Pale skin: This is also a result of anemia.
5. Frequent infections: AML can lead to a decrease in normal white blood cells that help fight off infections, making a person more susceptible to infections.
6. Easy bruising or bleeding: This can occur due to a low platelet count (thrombocytopenia). Platelets are responsible for blood clotting, and a shortage can lead to bruising and bleeding. This can include frequent nosebleeds, bleeding from the gums, heavier than normal menstrual periods, or bleeding that is hard to stop.
7. Petechiae: These are tiny, flat, red spots under the skin, caused by bleeding.
8. Bone and joint pain: This can occur because the build-up of leukemia cells near the surface of the bone or inside the joint can lead to pain.
9. Weight loss: Unintended weight loss can occur in people with AML.
10. Swollen gums: This is less common, but can occur when leukemia cells infiltrate the gum tissue.
11. Swollen liver or spleen: Leukemia cells may collect in the liver and spleen, causing them to enlarge.
12. Lymph node swelling: Though less common, leukemia cells can also collect in the lymph nodes, causing swelling.
It's important to note that these symptoms can also be caused by conditions other than AML. However, if these symptoms persist, it's crucial to seek medical attention to determine the cause and appropriate treatment. Early detection and treatment of AML can significantly improve the prognosis.
