This event will be a conversation between AML expert, Dr. Loh and AML survivor, Steve Buechler, who will share with us the importance of patient led decision making in AML care and what that can look like for you in collaboration with your healthcare team. Dr. Loh will provide a clinical perspective about how patients can play an active role in their care while Steve will share his own personal experiences about how he navigated communicating his preferences and values throughout treatment. Topics such as how quickly treatment decisions need to be made, important conversations you should be having with your oncology team and how these conversations can lead to improved outcomes will all be discussed. Katie joined the HealthTree Foundation as the Community Director for AML in 2021. She is a registered dietitian who previously worked at the VA hospital in Dallas, Texas where she coached veterans with blood cancer on how to use nutrition to improve their treatment outcomes and minimize cancer-related side effects. Katie is passionate about health education and patient empowerment. In her spare time, she loves to experiment with new recipes in the kitchen, spend time running outdoors, and travel to new places.

Dr. Melissa (Kah Poh) Loh, MBBCh BAO, MS

Melissa (Kah Poh) Loh is a geriatric hematologist oncologist specializing in the care of older adults with myeloid malignancies at James P. Wilmot Cancer Institute in Rochester, NY. Dr. Loh leads all geriatric hematology clinical efforts at her institution, including building a de novo geriatric hematology consultative clinic, inspiring and helping to organize geriatric hematology clinical trials, and training local and international mentees. Her research focuses on developing and implementing behavioral and supportive care interventions, particularly digital health technologies, to improve outcomes for older adults with blood cancer. Dr. Loh has mentored over 20 trainees and faculty both locally and internationally. She has served or currently serves on four PhD dissertation committees (Epidemiology, Biostatistics, and Nursing) and a Master capstone project (Biostatistics).

Steve Buechler

Steve Buechler is professor emeritus of sociology and a Distinguished Faculty Scholar at Minnesota State University, Mankato. On the eve of his retirement, he was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia and turned his writing skills to narrating his cancer odyssey. This writing became the basis for his memoir “How Steve Became Ralph: A Cancer/Stem Cell Odyssey (with Jokes). He has since pursued a second career and calling as a peer volunteer and patient advocate in the cancer community.
