What is an allogeneic transplant? So when we talk about transplant, I think what we should do is first understand the disease for which we transplant. And I'll get back to that. But one type of transplant is an autologous stem cell transplant. This is where you take cells from the patient and you give them back after high dose chemotherapy that's intended really just as a rescue from the chemotherapy. So it allows them to get very high doses of chemotherapy to treat their disease. And then they can have their own cells back to help start producing normal cells again. Unfortunately, that does not work in acute myeloid leukemia because acute myeloid leukemia cannot be cured in that way. The leukemia is present within the stem cells and will just continue to be there. So when we have AML, we have to treat patients, if needed, with an allogeneic stem cell transplant. An allogeneic just essentially means from someone else. So the patient is the recipient and we identify a donor for them to provide stem cells in order to do several different things. It goes beyond just rescuing the patient's bone marrow. It actually has immune surveillance and immune treatment features that we use to our advantage in acute myeloid leukemia.
