My SMM Story: Diagnosed at 78 and Feeling Fine
AI-generated title
I am 78 years old, in good health and live in Tucson, Arizona. Here is my story...
I had a prostatectomy in November 2004 and for 16+ years had a PSA of <.006 which is considered undetectable. In 2021 my PSA started to rise, not high but in the .010 - .014 range over a period of a year. It then went to .024 (basically doubled) in March 2023. Any range of .20 or higher is considered a reoccurrence. The VA had me go through a bone scan and an MRI and an enlarged lymph node was found near my left kidney. A biopsy was performed and it showed non-Hodgkins lymphoma. I then went to an oncologist outside of the VA and a Petscan and a Bone Marrow biopsy was performed in July 2023. The pet scan was clean, outside of the lymph node and the bone marrow biopsy showed a 15-20% condition of bad plasma cells, showing multiple myeloma. I had another pet scan last year and that was the same as before (no bone lesions). Another bone marrow biopsy showed my bad plasma cells had grown to 40%. My blood work over the past two years, every three months, shows the following ranges…going up and down:
IGA: 1082 to 1346, IGG: 632 to 859, IGM: 22 to 29 MSpike: 0.69 to 0.92
Free Kappa Light Chain: 13.95 to 17.44 (all with normal range)
Free Lambda Light Chain: 29.48 to 33.46
Free Kappa/Lambda Ratio: 0.45 to 0.56 (all within normal range)
My oncologist thinks the non-Hodskins lymphoma and SMM are inter-related. l am still considered to have SMM, no treatment necessary, and am going in for another Pet and Bone Marrow Biopsy next month (06-2025). I feel just fine with no pain or any discomfort and I actually broke three ribs last June slipping in a bathtub while on vacation. They healed in 6 weeks and have had no discomfort from them…..knock on wood.
Thanks for listening…..It feels good to share this !!!!!
