How Is Small-Cell Lymphocytic Lymphoma Staged And Classified?
Small-Cell Lymphocytic Lymphoma (SLL) is a type of non-Hodgkins lymphoma that primarily affects the lymph nodes. The staging and classification of SLL is based on the Ann Arbor staging system, which is commonly used for all types of lymphomas. This system uses Roman numerals I through IV to indicate the extent and spread of cancer.
Ann Arbor Staging System for SLL
- Stage I: The cancer is located in a single lymph node region or a single organ.
- Stage II: The cancer is located in two or more lymph node regions on the same side of the diaphragm, or the cancer has extended from a single lymph node region into a nearby organ.
- Stage III: The cancer is located in lymph node regions on both sides of the diaphragm.
- Stage IV: The cancer has spread widely into multiple organs outside the lymph system.
Classification of Small-Cell Lymphocytic Lymphoma
SLL is classified based on the cell type and characteristics. It is a type of B-cell lymphoma, which means it originates from B lymphocytes. The 'small-cell' descriptor refers to the small size of the cancerous lymphocytes as seen under a microscope. SLL is also often associated with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL), as the two conditions are different manifestations of the same disease. Therefore, the classification of SLL may also include a reference to CLL.
Phases of Small-Cell Lymphocytic Lymphoma
The phases of SLL are typically referred to as stages, as outlined above. However, in the context of treatment, the disease progression can also be described in terms of:
- Indolent: The cancer is slow-growing and may not require immediate treatment.
- Refractory: The cancer does not respond to treatment.
- Relapsed: The cancer has returned after a period of remission.
