Description

Patient-reported outcomes (PROs) are transforming how multiple myeloma treatments are evaluated, bringing the patient voice directly into clinical trials and real-world care. In this #ASH25 presentation, Fabio Efficace, PhD, discusses why PROs matter, how they are measured, and how they can influence treatment decisions, regulatory approval, and quality of life for people living with myeloma.

So I'm Dr. Fabio Ficacci, I'm the chair of the working party on quality of life of the Italian group for rodent hematologic disease and I am an expert in patient-reported accomer research in hematology. So in this abstract we have actually studied more than 500 patients with relapsed refractory multiple myeloma and we investigated the prognostic value of patient-reported outcomes at study entry. So we were looking at quality of life profile and to see whether fatigue or physical functioning or other aspects of the patient's quality of life provided prognostic information beyond and above what we use in this kind of setting. So we have seen that in patient with relapsed refractory multiple myeloma we have a wonderful index which is called the IMWG frailty index which actually classifies a patient into three group categories. We have seen that this index works very well in this setting in patient with relapsed refractory multiple myeloma but physical fitness of the patients actually provide independent prognostic information that goes beyond this wonderful index. So the key message is that the physician should pay attention to quality of life profile of the patient because this provides the valuable information and allow to identify most vulnerable groups that actually might not cope with the more aggressive treatment. So this is very important because we are to be able to identify those patients who can actually tolerate aggressive treatment versus those who cannot and this is so important because we need to provide indeed individualized treatment decision. So assessing quality of life is helping us to do these right choices.
