KnowMyeloma Day 2026: Latest Myeloma News From HealthTree Foundation

Posted on: Sep 24, 2026

KnowMyeloma Day is an annual awareness day held on the last Thursday of September (September 24, 2026) during Blood Cancer Awareness month. The purpose of this day is to educate the public about multiple myeloma, an incurable (but very treatable) blood cancer. It’s an opportunity to invite patients, caregivers, doctors, and advocates to share personal stories, helpful resources, or facts of life with this disease.

Multiple Myeloma is a type of blood cancer that develops in the plasma cells, which are white blood cells that fight infection and are located in your bone marrow. These plasma cells multiply uncontrollably, crowding out healthy blood cells and producing abnormal proteins called M-proteins. While there is currently no cure, advancements in therapy have significantly improved the prognosis and quality of life for patients.

Here is the latest myeloma news on HealthTree:

A New Genomic Definition of High-Risk Myeloma, Validated in Thousands of Patients

A large French analysis presented at the 2026 COMy (Controversies in Multiple Myeloma) Conference has confirmed that a new international consensus for identifying high-risk multiple myeloma works as intended, and that around 30% of newly diagnosed patients fall into the high-risk category at diagnosis.

Treatments for multiple myeloma have improved enormously over the past two decades. Projected progression-free survival (the time before the disease worsens) now reaches 17 years for transplant-eligible patients and 8 years for senior non-transplant patients. Even so, some patients still relapse early, and identifying them at diagnosis would allow doctors to match treatment intensity to risk.

To address this gap, the IMS/IMWG Consensus Genomic Staging (CGS) for high-risk myeloma was developed at a workshop in Barcelona in 2023. Dr. Jill Corre presented her group’s validation of this consensus in thousands of French patients.

Study Shows Two Years of Maintenance Therapy May Be Enough For Some People With Multiple Myeloma

For many people with multiple myeloma, maintenance therapy becomes part of everyday life. After initial treatment, many patients continue taking lenalidomide (Revlimid) to help keep multiple myeloma under control. Currently, the standard of care is to continue maintenance therapy until myeloma gets worse.

Now researchers are trying to learn how long patients need maintenance therapy. New results for the Phase 3 ENDURANCE trial show that, for patients who did not receive an autologous stem cell transplant, continuing lenalidomide for a long period of time may not be necessary for better survival outcomes. In fact, researchers also found that longer treatment was linked to more side effects and a higher risk of developing second cancers.
