Lymphoma CAR T-cell Therapy Guide

Coming Home and Follow-up Appointments

Last updated on: 11/21/2025

Recovery after CAR T-cell therapy takes time as your immune system slowly rebuilds. The first 30 days after the infusion are considered the acute recovery period. During this time:

  • Side effects such as fatigue, low appetite, infection, or neurologic symptoms like confusion may occur.
  • Be in close contact with your CAR T-cell healthcare team, and be able to travel back to the center for frequent follow-up appointments and blood draws. You will need to remain close to your treatment center for the first two weeks so your care team can closely monitor your condition.
  • A primary caregiver or support person must stay with you at all times for up to two weeks after the infusion to watch for symptoms and contact your care team if needed. If you don't have a caregiver, learn about your options here: What If I Don’t Have a Caregiver for CAR T-Cell Therapy?

While you may feel tired, gradually returning to daily activities is encouraged based on how you're feeling. You’ll also receive a CAR T-cell therapy wallet card that should be shown to any provider or emergency room staff. Remember to contact your care provider if anything feels out of the ordinary or if you have concerns about your symptoms.
