Patients familiar with cancer terminology often expect a staging number (Stage I through Stage IV). In this lesson, experts explain why BPDCN—and hematologic malignancies in general—does not fit into this traditional solid tumor framework.

How is BPDCN staged?

So we don't really stage like in the solid malignancy sense where there might be stage one, breast cancer, stage two, stage three. And then disseminate stage four. In BPDCN, because it's understood to be a hematologic malignancy, which is somewhat assumed to be, you know, disseminated, you know, at diagnosis, it could have tropism for the skin and show up on the skin. It could, you know, already be in the central nervous system, but it's typically a disease that isn’t stage by one, two, 3 or 4.
