Dr. Martin Schrappe, chairman of an international pediatric leukemia study group, presents results from the AIEOP-BFM ALL 2017 trial—a major study replacing toxic chemotherapy with a newer immunotherapy in children with high-risk ALL.
THE CHALLENGE:
ALL (acute lymphoblastic leukemia) is the most common cancer in children. Current chemotherapy works well, with 90% survival rates, but causes severe side effects that affect quality of life.
THE SOLUTION:
Instead of using chemotherapy alone, researchers tested replacing SOME chemotherapy with blinatumomab—a bispecific monoclonal antibody that trains the body's own T-cells to fight leukemia.
THE SURPRISING RESULT:
Not only was the new approach LESS toxic (fewer side effects), it was also MORE effective at fighting the cancer. This was unexpected and exciting.
THE STRATEGY:
Doctors didn't remove ALL chemotherapy. Instead, they carefully removed the MOST toxic chemotherapy elements while keeping the less toxic ones that still work well.
