WHAT IS CAR-T THERAPY?
A type of immunotherapy that takes a patient's own immune cells (T-cells), reprograms them to recognize and attack leukemia cells, then returns them to the body.
THE CHALLENGE:
Some newly diagnosed ALL patients have minimal residual disease (MRD) after chemotherapy—meaning small amounts of cancer remain. These patients have a high risk of relapse with standard treatment alone.
THE TRIAL:
- Patients with persistent MRD are enrolled
- T-cells are collected and reprogrammed
- Patients continue chemotherapy while cells are being modified
- Modified cells are infused back
- No additional chemotherapy after CAR-T
KEY RESULTS:
- Historically: 39% of high-risk patients stay in remission at 5 years
- After CAR-T: 71% remission at 3 years, 64% at 5 years
- Significant improvement for children and young adults with high-risk disease
SIDE EFFECTS:
Most common: cytokine release syndrome (immune system activating like fighting an infection). Ranges from mild flu-like symptoms to severe. Most patients in this trial had mild effects because they started with low disease levels.
