Last updated on: 11/7/2024

Overview

People with CLL may wonder what the side effects of CLL therapies are and how they can be managed. Learn answers to these questions in this guide's side-effect description and management sections.

Find more solutions for your CLL-related side effects on HealthTree's Side Effects Solutions page. Learn about what has worked (and what hasn't worked) for other blood cancer patients and add any side-effect solutions you have found helpful to support fellow patients.

We also invite you to watch the HealthTree webinar below with Dr. Deborah Stephens for a comprehensive understanding of common side effects of CLL therapies and how she manages them.

Highlights

How Are BTK Inhibitors’ Side Effects Managed?

BTK inhibitors can cause various side effects. Tylenol, steroids, hydration, and stretching are helpful to manage joint pain and muscle cramps. Severe diarrhea may require antidiarrhea medications and infection checks, while headaches can be treated with Tylenol and caffeine. Infections are handled with antibiotics or antifungal medications. Atrial fibrillation and hypertension are managed with medications and cardiology consultations. Bleeding or bruising may require pausing the medication, especially before surgeries.

How Are Venetoclax’s Side Effects Managed?

Venetoclax side effects, including tumor lysis syndrome, are managed with hydration, uric acid prevention, and hospitalization if needed. Diarrhea and nausea are treated with medications, and taking venetoclax at night can help. Low blood counts are monitored, and growth factor injections are given if necessary. Infections are managed with vaccines before treatment, antibiotics, and fever monitoring.
