Description

In this breakout session for newly diagnosed patients at the HealthTree Houston Myeloma Roundtable (October 24, 2026), nurse practitioner Michelly De Castro, DNP, of MD Anderson Cancer Center explains why supportive care matters as much as myeloma treatment. She covers infection prevention (antiviral, antifungal, and PJP prophylaxis, vaccines), managing low blood counts with transfusions and growth factors, bone health with Zometa and denosumab (Xgeva), tumor lysis syndrome, common side effects such as nausea, mouth sores, and fatigue, IgG levels and who needs IVIG, nutrition, and when to call your care team. Audience questions cover nurse navigators, fever as an emergency, chronic fatigue, and neuropathy.
