Bile Duct Cancer Prevention

There is no guaranteed way to prevent bile duct cancer. Many people who develop cholangiocarcinoma have no known preventable risk factors. However, reducing certain causes of chronic liver and bile duct damage may help lower risk.

THE BASICS: There is no proven way to completely prevent bile duct cancer. Steps that may reduce risk include preventing viral hepatitis, limiting alcohol, avoiding tobacco, maintaining liver health, preventing liver fluke infections, and appropriately managing conditions that damage the bile ducts.

Prevent hepatitis infection

Chronic hepatitis B and hepatitis C can damage the liver and may increase the risk of intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma. Ways to protect your liver include:

  • Receiving the hepatitis B vaccine when appropriate

  • Avoiding sharing needles

  • Using appropriate precautions to prevent blood exposure

  • Getting tested for hepatitis if you have risk factors

Effective treatments are available for hepatitis B and hepatitis C.

Avoid tobacco

Tobacco increases the risk of many cancers and may contribute to bile duct cancer risk. If you smoke, quitting can improve your overall health and reduce your risk of several cancers.

Limit alcohol

Heavy alcohol consumption can contribute to cirrhosis and chronic liver disease. Avoiding heavy alcohol use can help protect liver health.

Maintain a healthy weight

Obesity and metabolic liver disease can contribute to chronic liver damage. Regular physical activity and a balanced diet can help reduce the risk of fatty liver disease and other metabolic conditions.

Prevent liver fluke infections

In areas where liver flukes are common, people can become infected by eating raw or undercooked freshwater fish. Properly cooking fish can prevent these infections.

Manage bile duct disease

People with conditions such as primary sclerosing cholangitis should receive care from clinicians experienced in managing chronic bile duct disease. Although treatment cannot eliminate all cancer risk, appropriate monitoring may help identify concerning changes.

Treat congenital bile duct abnormalities

Certain bile duct cysts can substantially increase cancer risk. Doctors may recommend surgical removal of some abnormalities to reduce future complications and cancer risk.

Protect your liver

Steps that support overall liver health can include:

  • Avoiding unnecessary exposure to toxic chemicals

  • Using medications as directed

  • Preventing hepatitis

  • Avoiding heavy alcohol use

  • Maintaining a healthy weight
