My interest in science dates back to my childhood in Western Ukraine. As young boys, my two best friends and I loved science and wanted to become physicians to help people. When my family immigrated to the United States when I was 16, I continued to pursue this dream by learning English and attending medical school.
During medical school, my love for medicine was solidified when I began working with patients. As a hematologist and oncologist at Perlmutter Cancer Center, I specialize in providing care to people who have cancers of the blood, such as lymphoma and leukemia. It is a privilege to help people who have these conditions, and I am inspired by and appreciative of their strength and dignity.
Since I began treating people who have cancer, there has been so much progress in understanding hematological conditions, which has led to tremendous treatment advances for my patients. I am confident that this scientific progress will continue to improve care. However, I also understand that care involves more than medical treatment, so I strive to create an environment that is also personal and compassionate.
In recent years, I reconnected with my two childhood friends who also loved science, and who now live in different parts of the world. I was happy to discover that they also became doctors.
